Internship Programs at Marien + Company

As an intern at Marien + Company, you will have many of the same responsibilities of full-time, first-year staff accountants. You will obtain hands-on, real-world experience by working directly with the firm’s partners and staff members to assist with a variety of client engagements.

We offer a flexible internship program schedule, depending on our needs and the time of the year:

  • Winter/Spring interns are generally employed from January to April 15.
  • Summer interns are generally employed from June to mid-August.
  • Part-time interns work throughout the year.

Summer internships are by far the most popular. The work this time of year focuses on working on an audit team to plan and begin the fieldwork on some of our governmental and nonprofit audits. You will go out to the client offices and receive some formal and some on-the-job training.

In addition, interns have been assigned to tax returns for individuals, corporations, partnerships, limited liability companies and nonprofits. In all of these assignments, you will be taught how to use our paperless filing systems, trial balance program, tax preparation software and will use Microsoft Excel and Word extensively.

Internships are designed for college students in their Junior or Senior year of study who are majoring in accounting. Whenever possible, we also like to re-hire interns from one summer to the next. When hiring an intern, we look for the same qualities that we look for in a new staff accountant, because many times, our interns come back as staff accountants. For that reason, a minimum grade point average of 3.0 is required. We are looking for individuals with experience in Microsoft Excel and Word. A preliminary accounting course is necessary so you understand debits and credits and have some basic concepts. We will give you any additional training that you need for the internship.

We start receiving resumes from summer intern candidates in the fall semester. Many times we don’t know how many, if any, positions will be open until the spring semester, but the earlier you apply the better.
